Quit Something Today.

July 24, 2007

Here’s a thought for you. People have been saying this for a while, in different ways. I’m going to throw my hat in the ring. Here it is: Quit.

Now I don’t mean give up on a dream. But give up the other things. Give up on something that’s getting you nowhere. Quit the thing you never really wanted to do anyway. Stop doing things that are wasting your time. Get it over with.

Now, get on with the other things, and recognize the empowerment of the freedom you now have to pursue something you’re great at and that you don’t want to fail at.

I recently quit a few things that were at one time very important to me but that weren’t worth following through The Dip. I quit several other blogs to launch this one. I quit a master’s thesis I was at the research stage in (a year into the process) to start a new graduate project on a leap of faith and lots of passion. I quit simple things, like obsessing over my lawn and watching too much TV. And I’ve never been at a more exciting or promising place in my career. So far, quitting has changed my life – in a matter of weeks.

It can change your life too. It could change your career. You can quit anything you want. The choice is up to you. It’s your risk, after all. But that’s what makes it so fulfilling when it pays off.

What will you quit? Do it now, before you decide it’s too much of a risk. Quit. Stop. Really.

Now, move.

  1. Great advice, Tiffany. Doing mediocre work because we’re involved in too many things is something that drags down many a connected worker. I’ve certainly been guilty of it myself.

Seth’s advice on quitting those dead-end things that are weighing you down is spot-on. But the tough part can still be making decisions on exactly which of your activities are getting in the way of your success.

Any advice on how to ask — and answer that critical question?

  2. Thanks, Tiffany.

Bryan, my commitment to myself on this topic is to quit the things that I am certain I should quit.

The gray areas have a way of sorting themselves out over time, but until then, there’s a good chance that we are clinging to a few of our favorite hindrances, hoping to find something easier and simpler to give up.

    Bryan,
What an excellent question. I think it’s something we may always be struggling to figure out, but regularly stopping to assess your situation is already a great step towards success.

The real answer really depends for each person, but I agree with Chuck. I think when you’re truly honest with yourself, you can easily discover what those things are. You have those feelings, you know. It’s different than self-doubt or cowardice (those may signal something you need to stick with.) It’s bravery to realize there truly could be something better. The hard part is making the brave decision to let them go.

I think for me, it’s been a matter of deciding to quit the things I didn’t really have any passion for. The things that weren’t helping me achieve my dreams in any way but just took up time. And then also having the courage to continually re-evaluate. To be flexible with your own dreams and plans is difficult, but totally worth it.

And here’s an important final note: You can always start something again if you quit and realize it was a mistake – that’s the other end of quitting. Starting again. I’ve also been doing a lot of that lately!

  4. Chuck and Tiffany:

Great answers here. I think you’re right: that we often know in our gut that we should quit certain things, activities, jobs, relationships, etc., but that we hang on and try to battle through them anyway.

I know I have some more self-examining to do.
